Bohol is close enough to Cebu for a day trip, but a day is tighter than the brochures suggest. A fast ferry takes about two hours from Cebu Port to Tagbilaran, and the drive from the port to the famous Chocolate Hills takes a good while more. If you plan the sailings carefully, you can see the hills, stop for a quick local lunch and be back in Cebu City by evening.
This guide covers the ferry options and the times we could verify, what a realistic day looks like, and what is worth skipping if you only have one day. Fares and sailings change often, so use the figures below as a planning guide and confirm them with the operator before you travel.
Getting from Cebu to Tagbilaran
OceanJet and SuperCat run fast ferries from Cebu Port (Pier 1) to Tagbilaran, the capital of Bohol. The crossing takes about two hours. A 2026 fare listing puts OceanJet's Tourist Class (open air) at ₱800 and Business Class at ₱1,200, and fuel surcharges may add to that. Another guide puts SuperCat from around ₱750 and Lite Ferries from around ₱450, but Lite Ferries takes about 3.5 hours. Those fares conflict with each other, so treat them as a starting range and check the current price on the operator's site.
The fast ferries carry passengers only. If you want to bring a car, you will need a roll-on, roll-off ferry, which takes much longer. Most day-trippers should leave the car at home.
Choosing a Sailing
The timetable on one 2026 listing has about thirteen sailings in each direction, starting around 5:10 in the morning. The early sailings matter most for a day trip. The 6:00 AM departure from Cebu reaches Tagbilaran at about 8:00, which leaves enough of the day to see the hills before the midday heat. Arrive at the port at least 30 minutes before departure, since check-in takes time.
For the return, the listing shows late-afternoon sailings from Tagbilaran, with the last one around 6:30 PM. A sailing in the late afternoon gives you a full day without rushing. Sailing times change, so confirm the return before you buy your ticket.
Reaching the Chocolate Hills
The Chocolate Hills are a cluster of rounded limestone hills in the interior of Bohol, best seen from a viewing deck. One guide puts the drive from Panglao at about 1.5 hours, which suggests a similar trip from Tagbilaran. Ask your driver for the travel time before you agree on a price, and allow extra time for stops.
The entrance fee for the viewing area was reported at ₱150 per person by one guide, but the date of that figure is unclear. Check the fee at the gate. The best light is in the early morning, when the hills are clearer and the heat has not yet built up.
A Realistic Day Plan
On the early sailing, you reach Tagbilaran around 8:00. The drive to the Chocolate Hills uses up much of the morning, so ask your driver to confirm the timing before you leave the port. A simple lunch in town or near the hills keeps the afternoon free for a second stop, if you want one.
The Loboc River is the usual second stop, but it adds a long drive and a boat ride, and it is hard to fit comfortably into the same day as the hills. If you want the river and the hills, consider staying overnight in Bohol instead of rushing back. The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella is another common stop. We could not verify its opening hours or entry fee, so check both before you plan the route.
Build in a buffer before your return sailing. Traffic and the drive back to the port can take longer than your map suggests, and missing the last ferry means an unplanned night in Bohol.
What to Skip and What to Save for Later
If you have only one day, skip the long list of stops. Pick the Chocolate Hills and one other place, and leave the rest for a second trip. Bohol's beaches are a separate trip. A day trip leaves little time for them, and the return ferry limits how far you can go.
Tours sold from Cebu hotels or booking sites bundle the ferry, the drive and the stops. They save planning time, but they usually fix the schedule and the stops, so compare the price and the sailing time before you book. A tour can be the better choice for someone who does not want to haggle over a van.
Who This Day Trip Suits
A Bohol day trip suits travellers who already have a few days in Cebu and want a change of scenery. It works best for people who are comfortable with early starts and long days on the road. Families with young children may find the ferry and the drive tiring, and an overnight stay is usually easier for them.
If you are also planning time on the other side of the island, seven places beyond the crowds in Cebu gives you ideas for the days before or after your trip. For a slower introduction to the city itself, the heritage walk through old Cebu City is an easy morning to fit in before the ferry.
