Cebu has a new indoor venue that can hold up to 25,000 people. SM Seaside Cebu Arena opened in July 2026 in South Road Properties, beside SM Seaside City, and it is the largest indoor arena in the Visayas. For visitors, the useful question is less about the building than about what it will bring to the city: more concerts and sports events, and perhaps a reason to stay an extra night.
This guide sets out what has been confirmed, where the reports disagree, which events are on the calendar and how to get there from the airport. It also covers the parts that will matter if you plan to attend an event, including traffic and costs.
What Opened, and Where the Figures Differ
SM Prime Holdings developed the arena at a reported cost of about ₱7 billion. The architects, Arquitectonica of Miami, gave it a wave-shaped glass front that echoes SM Mall of Asia Arena. Inside, the company highlights a centre-hung display, 30 premier suites above the VIP sections and a dedicated practice court.
The reports do not agree on every detail. Most describe 25,000 as the maximum number of guests. Wikipedia gives 16,000 seats, with a full-house capacity of 25,000, but that entry may not be up to date. One report says the arena opened on Thursday, 9 July, while another gives 11 July as the scheduled date. Before you buy tickets, confirm the seating layout and the seat numbers for your event with SM Prime or the official ticket seller.
The Events So Far
The first event was a concert by BINI on 11 July. Since then, the calendar has mixed Filipino acts with international tours. Published dates include IV of Spades on 18 July, KZ Tandingan and TJ Monterde on 5 September, Hillsong Worship on 18 September and LANY on 6 and 12 November. Four of those dates have already passed at the time of writing, so the LANY shows are the ones most useful for planning a trip.
Sport has been slower to arrive. The 2027 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League matches were moved to Philsports Arena in Pasig because the Cebu arena would not be ready in time. The venue is also being considered for the 2027 FIBA Women's Asia Cup and for some CESAFI and PBA games. Those are proposals rather than confirmed bookings.
What the Tourism Case Actually Rests On
SM Prime's argument is that a large venue, combined with conventions and hotels, can turn a one-night stop into a multi-day visit. The company says concerts, sport and conventions together can encourage longer stays. One SM executive has also suggested that a K-pop concert in Cebu could draw fans from Korea, Indonesia and Singapore. Those remarks describe what the company hopes for. They are not a measure of how many visitors have arrived.
The wider plan is a district in South Road Properties that includes the SMX Convention Center Seaside Cebu, the arena and two hotels, Park Inn by Radisson and Radisson. The hotels are targeted to open in the first half of 2028. Until then, most visitors will stay in the existing hotels across Cebu City and along the South Road, and the arena should be treated as one more reason to book a room, not as a new source of rooms.
No published figures yet show how many visitors the arena has drawn or how many jobs it has created. The provincial government and SM describe expected benefits in general terms, and that is worth keeping in mind when you read the headlines.
Getting There from the Airport and the City
From Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the arena is about 15 to 18 kilometres away. The drive takes 25 to 35 minutes off-peak, but it can take 45 to 60 minutes or more between 7 and 10 in the morning and 4 and 7 in the evening. Those peak hours matter most for event nights, when the road can be crowded well before the show starts.
A ride-hailing car from the airport is the simplest option. One source puts the fare at around ₱350 to ₱600, but surge pricing can push it higher. A metered yellow taxi is also possible and is likely to cost more, roughly ₱500 to ₱700 by the same estimate. The cheapest route is the MyBus, at about ₱50 for each leg, but it requires a transfer at SM City Cebu, takes 60 to 80 minutes and has a limited late-evening service. Treat all of these figures as rough, because fares and schedules change.
After a concert, leave earlier than you think you need. The drive back is the part most likely to take longer than planned, and rides may be harder to find once the crowd spills onto the road.
Crowds, Costs and the Parts Nobody Mentions
Expect heavy traffic on the South Road around event nights, and plan your arrival with that in mind. I could not find a published price list for the arena's tickets, so check each event's price on its own listing. Parking and food costs also vary by event, and it is safer to ask the venue directly than to assume.
The rainy season runs into the final months of the year, so bring a light rain jacket for the walk from the road to the entrance. The arena is also new, and the surrounding district is still being built. Some areas will look unfinished, and the nearby restaurant choices will likely grow as the hotels open.
Who This Suits
The arena is most useful for concert fans from across the Visayas and Mindanao, sports fans who want to watch a big match without travelling to Manila, and visitors already in Cebu for a conference. If you are looking for quiet beaches or a slow itinerary, it will not change much for you. You may still find it useful as a single evening out before you head to the coast.
