How to Get to Palawan from Cebu: Routes, Costs and Time

Ren Calago0

The quickest answer: fly. Mactan-Cebu International Airport has direct flights to all three Palawan gateways, so most trips never need to touch Manila. Puerto Princesa gets the most flights, Busuanga is the airport for Coron, and El Nido has its own small airport at Lio. The harder question is which one to book, because the airfare you see on the screen is only part of what the trip will cost you in pesos and hours.

This guide works through each route the way you would actually travel it: the flight, the ride after you land, the fees nobody mentions at checkout, and how long it really takes from your front door to your first beach. Then it matches each route to the kind of trip it suits best.

A quick word on prices. Airfares between Cebu and Palawan swing a lot with seat sales, school breaks and the dry-season rush, and land and sea fares have been creeping up with fuel surcharges. Treat every figure here as a planning range and check the live price before you pay.

Pick the Airport Before You Pick the Fare

Palawan is a long, thin province, and its three entry points sit far apart. Landing at the wrong one can cost you a full day on the road or a ferry you did not plan for.

Puerto Princesa (PPS)

The provincial capital and the busiest of the three. It is the natural base for the Underground River and Honda Bay, and the starting point for the road north to Port Barton, San Vicente and El Nido. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific both serve the Cebu route, and the flight runs about an hour and a quarter. More flights usually means more seat sales, which is why this route is often the cheapest way onto the island.

El Nido (Lio Airport, ENI)

A small private airport north of El Nido town, served by turboprop aircraft. The former AirSWIFT flights now run under Cebgo, Cebu Pacific's regional arm, since July 2026, and Cebgo has flown Cebu to El Nido daily since late October 2025. Fewer seats means fares climb fast in peak months, and small planes come with tighter baggage rules, so check the allowance before you pack for a week.

Busuanga (USU) for Coron

Here is the detail that trips people up: there is no airport in Coron town. Flights land at Francisco B. Reyes Airport on Busuanga Island, the larger island west of Coron Island, and you finish the trip by road. Cebgo has flown Cebu to Busuanga since 2019, and Philippine Airlines also sells the route.

The Real Cost of Each Route

Add up everything between leaving home and dropping your bag at the hotel, and the order of cheapest to priciest can flip.

Cebu to Puerto Princesa, then onward

  • Airfare: often the lowest of the three routes, especially on promo dates.
  • Airport to city hotel: a short tricycle ride.
  • If El Nido is the goal: a shared van to El Nido costs roughly ₱600 to ₱800 a seat and takes five to six hours. Vans leave from early morning until mid-afternoon, so a late flight usually means a night in Puerto Princesa first.
  • That extra night is the hidden cost. A cheap fare plus a city room plus a van can match or beat a direct El Nido fare.

The road trip itself is covered in detail in our guide to Puerto Princesa to El Nido by van, including which seats to ask for.

Cebu to El Nido direct

  • Airfare: usually the highest base fare of the three, and the first to sell out in March, April, May and the December holidays.
  • Lio Airport to El Nido town: about 15 to 20 minutes. A chartered tricycle runs around ₱200, and many resorts include or sell a pickup.
  • El Nido's ecotourism development fee of ₱400 per person, valid for ten days, is paid once for the stay.
  • No van, no lost day. If your leave is short, the time saved is worth real money.

Cebu to Busuanga for Coron

  • Airfare: often in the middle. Round-trip fares on Philippine Airlines for early 2027 travel dates were showing from roughly ₱6,000 to ₱9,000, and promos can go lower.
  • Airport to Coron town: about 45 minutes by road. Shared vans wait for flights and charge roughly ₱150 to ₱250 a seat. A private van costs several times that, so agree the price before you load your bags.
  • Coron's tour and lake fees are paid on the island tours, not on arrival.

When Manila is the backup

If the direct flight is full or priced out on your dates, a Cebu to Manila to Palawan itinerary will get you there, and Manila has far more Palawan flights. Book both legs on one ticket so a delay on the first is the airline's problem, not yours. A self-made connection on two separate tickets needs a buffer of several hours, and on a late arrival it can turn into an airport hotel night that wipes out the saving.

How Long Each Trip Really Takes

These are door-to-door estimates for someone living in Metro Cebu, counting the drive to Mactan, a check-in buffer of about two hours, the flight and the ride on the other side. Traffic on the bridges and weather delays can stretch any of them.

  • Cebu to Puerto Princesa city: about 4 to 5 hours.
  • Cebu to El Nido via Puerto Princesa and a van: about 10 to 12 hours, and often split across two days.
  • Cebu to El Nido direct: about 4 to 5 hours.
  • Cebu to Coron town via Busuanga: about 4.5 to 5.5 hours.
  • Any route through Manila: plan on most of a day.

Which Route Fits Your Trip

First trip, El Nido is the dream

Fly direct to Lio if the fare is within reach. You arrive with an afternoon to spare and can be on a lagoon tour the next morning. If the direct fare is double the Puerto Princesa one, take the cheaper flight, sleep in the city, and catch an early van the next day.

Families with young children

Avoid the five-to-six-hour van ride if you can. Either fly straight to Lio or make Puerto Princesa the whole holiday, with a day for the Underground River permits and boat ride and an easy day at Honda Bay. On the Lio route, pack light and confirm baggage limits before you buy extra bags for strollers and car seats.

On a tight budget

Watch for Puerto Princesa promo fares and fly on weekdays outside school breaks. Coron can also be good value because the airport van is cheap and many travellers spend their money on tours rather than a fancy room. Book the return at the same time, since one-way fares out of Palawan tend to rise as the date gets closer.

Seeing both El Nido and Coron

Book an open-jaw ticket: fly Cebu to El Nido, ride the fast craft to Coron, and fly Busuanga back to Cebu, or do it in reverse. The crossing takes about three and a half hours, with tickets roughly ₱1,800 to ₱3,200 depending on operator and season. The El Nido departure is usually around midday and the Coron side leaves early morning, so time your hotel checkouts around it. Rough seas cancel crossings, so leave a spare day before your flight home. Once you land, our rundown of Coron island hopping tours helps you choose which boat day to book first.

A Few Moves That Save Time and Money

  • Compare the full trip, not the fare. Write down airfare, bags, airport rides, any extra night and the van or ferry, then compare totals.
  • Buy checked bags online when you book. Airport baggage counters charge more.
  • Choose a morning flight. It leaves room for the van or the ferry, and for delays.
  • Avoid booking a non-refundable return on the same day as an inter-island ferry.
  • Check the weather from June to October, when the southwest monsoon can ground small planes and stop boats.

The cheapest-looking flight wins only when it also lands you near where you want to sleep. Pick the airport that matches your first base, price the whole journey, and keep one day in reserve. That alone takes most of the stress out of reaching Palawan.
