Christmas in Baguio is much bigger than the Country Club's Christmas Village. The city's own programme usually opens around 1 December with the lighting of the big tree on Session Road and Saint Louis University's lantern parade, then fills December with a Christmas market and free shows at the Rose Garden in Burnham Park, evening Simbang Gabi masses, a cadets' parade of toy soldiers, and a New Year's Eve countdown with fireworks at the Melvin Jones Grandstand. Add cold mornings, fog in the pines and hot chocolate, and it is one of the best times of year to visit, as long as you plan around the crowds.
This guide covers what usually happens and where, how the season has been scheduled in recent years, what is free, and how to handle the traffic and cold. The Christmas Village has its own guide with 2026 tickets and hours; this one is about everything else.
The city usually releases its full Christmas schedule in late November. The dates below follow the 2025 programme, so treat them as a guide and confirm the 2026 dates on the city's official pages before planning around a specific event.

Most city events are free. Arrive early for the tree lighting and New Year's Eve, when Session Road and Burnham Park fill up fast.
The Tree Lighting and the Lantern Parade
The season's opening night is the one to plan around. The giant tree on Upper Session Road is switched on in the late afternoon, and Saint Louis University's lantern parade follows, moving down Session Road toward Burnham Park with costumed students, illuminated lanterns and a marching band. The 2025 parade was the university's 17th, themed around Christmas traditions from around the world. Fireworks usually close the night.
Session Road gets packed. Find a spot along the route by mid-afternoon if you want a clear view, and expect road closures around the centre that evening.
The Christmas Market and Shows at the Rose Garden
Through December, the Rose Garden in Burnham Park becomes the centre of the city's celebrations. The Baguio Christmas Market sets up there with stalls selling food, crafts and gifts, and the garden hosts free evening shows: university choirs and concerts, a Nutcracker staged with the Philippine Military Academy, and cultural performances from the Cordillera.
It is the most relaxed way to feel the season, especially on weeknights. Combine it with a walk around Burnham Lake and, later, the Harrison Road night market next door.
Simbang Gabi in Baguio
Simbang Gabi, the nine days of masses before Christmas, runs from 15 or 16 December to 24 December. Parishes across the city hold dawn masses, and in recent years there have also been anticipated evening masses at the Rose Garden, which suit visitors who would rather not get up at four in the morning. Baguio Cathedral on its hill above Session Road is the most atmospheric place for a dawn mass. Dress warmly: it is properly cold at that hour.
Lights, Gardens and Decorations
Beyond the main events, much of the city dresses up. Session Road businesses compete for the best-decorated façade, barangay halls put up displays, and the Botanical Garden has run a floral exhibit with evening opening through the holidays. Camp John Hay's restaurants and hotels decorate too, and a slow walk through the pines on a cold evening is a Christmas experience in itself.
Free and Low-Cost Christmas Things to Do
Opening night on Session Road
The tree lighting, lantern parade and fireworks cost nothing. Just come early for a spot.
Rose Garden evenings
Choirs, concerts and cultural shows at Burnham Park, with the Christmas market alongside.
Hot drinks and night snacks
Strawberry taho in the morning, hot chocolate in the afternoon and night market snacks after dark.
Crowds, Traffic and the Cold
December is one of Baguio's busiest months. Weekends, the days around Christmas and the run-up to New Year bring heavy traffic on the roads up the mountain and inside the city. Book rooms early, choose a base you can walk from, and treat taxis as a backup rather than the plan.
The cold builds through the month. Nights get chilly by mid-December, and the coldest mornings usually come in January. Our guide to the coldest months in Baguio covers what to pack and how to stay warm.
Tips for Christmas in Baguio
A few habits that make the season easier to enjoy.
Check the 2026 schedule
The city usually releases the full programme in late November. Confirm dates before planning around one event.
Go midweek if you can
Weeknights in early to mid-December are far calmer than weekends and the days just before Christmas.
Stay walkable
A room near Session Road or Burnham Park puts the tree, the Rose Garden and the night market within a short walk.
Dress for the evening
Most events happen after dark, when it is coldest. A warm jacket, a beanie and closed shoes make standing outside comfortable.
Pick your nights carefully, give yourself time to walk rather than drive, and Baguio in December is cold air, lights, music and pine trees, with or without the snow machine.
