No road links El Nido and Coron, so you have three ways across: a fast ferry, a 40-minute flight, or a multi-day boat trip. The ferry is the middle option. It takes about 3.5 to 4 hours, leaves El Nido around midday, and costs roughly PHP 1,800 to 3,000 one way depending on the company, the seat class and the date.
The crossing covers about 127 km of open water, from El Nido Ferry Terminal at the northern end of mainland Palawan to Coron Port on Busuanga island. Both terminals are small, and both are tied to the weather more than to any printed timetable.
The detail that shapes your plans is timing. Boats leave El Nido at 12:00 or 12:30 and reach Coron between about 3:30 and 4:30 in the afternoon. Boats from Coron leave early, around 6:00 to 8:00 in the morning, and reach El Nido before lunch. Going north to south, you lose half a day. Going the other way, you keep your afternoon.

Phimal Fast Ferry
The one to know if you want a morning departure from El Nido. It sails only a few days a week, so check which days before you plan around it.
Confirm before you commit. Booking sites often disagree about days, times and fares on this route, and operators pause or swap sailings with little notice. Check directly with the company or your accommodation a day or two before you travel.
Getting to and From the Terminals
El Nido Ferry Terminal is close to the town centre, about a 10-minute walk, and a tricycle covers it cheaply if you have bags. A small port fee of around PHP 20 is paid in cash. Arrive at least an hour before departure, and earlier for Atienza.
Coron Port is about 2 km from town. Tricycles and habal-habal run the distance in minutes, so sorting out where to stay in Coron before you land saves a scramble at the pier. Coron also charges a one-time environmental fee of roughly PHP 200, reported as valid for 10 days. Carry cash for both.
Ferry, Flight or Boat Expedition
The flight is the fastest. AirSWIFT flies El Nido to Busuanga (USU) in about 40 minutes, and fares start at roughly PHP 3,500, climbing past PHP 7,000 on busy days. Add the ride from El Nido airport and the 30 to 45 minute van or tricycle from Busuanga to Coron town, and you are still looking at a few hours door to door. Seats are limited and baggage rules are tighter than on a boat. It is the better choice if you get seasick or have a connection to make.
The ferry costs less than most flights, carries bigger bags and needs no airport transfers. It also eats most of a day once you count check-in.
The boat expedition is a different kind of trip, not a transfer. Group trips of three days and two nights have been priced around PHP 18,000 to 18,500 per person, with nights in simple nipa huts, while a four-day TAO Philippines trip runs about US$650. You swim and snorkel at lagoons and beaches on the way. Confirm inclusions, group size and the season before paying.
Sea Conditions and Cancellations
From roughly December to May the water is usually smoother and cancellations are uncommon. June to October brings the southwest monsoon, and rough swells can cancel or delay sailings, sometimes several in a week. Early November and May can still be choppy. Morning crossings tend to be calmer than afternoon ones, which is a mild disadvantage for the midday boats out of El Nido.
Refund and rebooking rules vary by company, so ask before you pay what happens if the Coast Guard holds the boat in port. Never plan a same-day international or domestic flight out of Busuanga on the day your ferry arrives. Boats can run one to two hours late, and a spare night in Coron costs far less than a missed flight.
What to Pack for the Crossing
The air-conditioned cabin runs cold, so bring a light jacket. Windows are often scratched or fogged, and views from inside are limited. If you take motion-sickness tablets, take them before boarding, not after you feel unwell. Bring water, a few snacks, a power bank and a downloaded book or playlist, because onboard WiFi should not be counted on.
Keep your passport or another valid ID with your booking confirmation, since tickets are checked at the gate. Weight limits differ between operators, and excess bags can attract a fee, so check the allowance when you book. Keep valuables, medication and anything fragile in a daypack rather than the hold.
Booking Tips for Each Season
From December to March, book several days ahead, and earlier for the smaller boats. Outside the peak you can often buy a day or two before, but only if a boat is actually running that day, so confirm before you assume. If you are building a longer trip, the Palawan itinerary for 5, 7 or 10 days shows where this crossing fits, and the El Nido area guide helps you pick a base before the boat.
The ferry is not the quickest way between the two towns, but it is the cheaper and simpler one for most travellers. Choose your boat, confirm it a day or two ahead, and leave a buffer before any flight you cannot afford to miss.
