Negros Oriental is one of the easiest provinces in the Visayas to enjoy on a short break. Dumaguete is the base for most trips, and from there you can reach waterfalls, sandbars, marine sanctuaries and quiet highland roads in a few hours. The best part is that you can spend very little or quite a lot, depending on how you travel.
Below are five weekend getaways, arranged from the lightest budget to the most comfortable. The costs are rough estimates based on published guides and listings, so check prices with operators before you book, since boat and tour rates change with the season.
1. Casaroro Falls and Twin Lakes, Valencia (Under ₱1,000)
This is the cheapest trip on the list and a good first taste of the province. A motorbike or habal-habal ride takes you to the Casaroro trailhead, and the walk to the falls is short and easy to follow. A small environmental fee applies, and an optional kayak ride on Twin Lakes is an easy extra.
Budget roughly ₱300 to ₱600 per person for transport, fees and a simple lunch. Go early, since the trail gets busy by midday and the afternoon heat makes the climb harder.
2. Manjuyod Sandbar, Bais City (About ₱700 Per Person)
The Manjuyod white sandbar is one of the most photographed spots in the province, and it is easy to reach on a day trip. The bus from Dumaguete to Bais costs about ₱55 one way, and the trip takes around an hour. From there, a private boat for five to seven people is listed at ₱3,500, which works out to roughly ₱500 to ₱700 each when you split it.
Bring your own food and drinks, since there are no shops on the sandbar. Confirm the boat capacity with the operator before you book, because some listings are unclear about how many passengers a boat can carry.
3. Apo Island Day Trip, Dauin (About ₱2,000 to ₱4,000)
Apo Island is a small marine sanctuary off Dauin, known for its clear water and turtles. The usual way to visit is a pumboat trip from Dauin, with a round-trip boat fee of about ₱2,000 to ₱3,500. Split the boat with other travellers to bring the cost down.
A mandatory guide costs about ₱300 per group, and a barbecue lunch on the island is around ₱200 to ₱400. Weather can cancel boat trips, so if you are doing the trip in a short weekend, plan it for the first day.
4. Bais Dolphin Watching and Manjuyod Joiner Tour (About ₱2,575)
If you don't want to organise your own boat, a joiner tour combines dolphin watching in Bais with time on the Manjuyod sandbar. One listing shows a price of ₱2,575, but it does not say whether that is per person, what is included in full, or where the tour departs. Ask the operator to confirm these details before you pay.
This option suits solo travellers and couples who want the sandbar without the hassle of arranging a boat, and it is one of the most relaxed ways to see the area for a single day.
5. A Comfortable Weekend by the Sea (Ask for Current Rates)
For a slower, more comfortable weekend, look for a beach resort near Dauin or Sibulan and plan your days around one or two tours. You can make Apo Island the centrepiece and keep the rest of the weekend for swimming, long meals and an early night. Rates vary a lot by season, and I did not find reliable published prices for these resorts, so contact them directly before you plan.
This option is the easiest to enjoy, and it works well for families who would rather not travel every day.
Budgeting for Your Weekend
A simple two-night, two-day budget in Dumaguete, with one island trip and one waterfall day, can come to roughly ₱4,500 to ₱6,500 per person. That covers budget accommodation, meals, transport and entrance fees, but it does not include onward travel to Dumaguete from Cebu or Manila.
Take cash, since most small stops do not accept cards. Keep ₱500 to ₱1,000 aside for unexpected tricycle rides and entrance fees, and check the current price of each activity on the day you plan to go.
Which Getaway Should You Choose?
If you have one free day, pick the Manjuyod sandbar or Casaroro Falls. If you want the sea and a bit of adventure, Apo Island is the best choice. If you are travelling alone and want something easy, the joiner tour is the simplest. Families and couples who want to slow down will enjoy the resort weekend.
The best getaway is the one that matches your budget and your energy. You do not need to do all five to enjoy Negros Oriental, and a single good day by the water can be enough for a weekend.
