Sinulog 2027: Where to Stay and How to Get Around

Ren Calago0

Sinulog 2027 falls on Sunday, 17 January, and the two problems that come up most for visitors are the same every year: finding a room you can actually get to on parade day, and moving around a city where the main roads are closed. This guide covers both. It goes through the areas worth staying in, how early to book, how to get in from the airport and how to get around Cebu City and out of it again over festival weekend.

The road closures and transport changes below are based on how Cebu City ran the 2025 and 2026 festivals, which followed much the same pattern. Treat them as a planning guide, and check the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) and the Sinulog Foundation in early January for the confirmed 2027 plan. For what has been announced about the 2027 festival itself, see Sinulog 2027: what's confirmed so far.

How Early to Book

Book now if you can. In January 2026 the Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Association of Cebu reported occupancy of up to 90% for Sinulog weekend, and some hotels had already stopped selling rooms online more than a week before the parade. Hotels downtown near the procession routes and around the Cebu Business Park filled up first.

Rates on festival weekend are set by each hotel, so expect to pay more than you would on an ordinary weekend in January. A booking with free cancellation is the safest choice while the parade route is still unconfirmed, since it lets you switch hotels once the official map is out.

Where to Stay for Sinulog

Two places anchor the festival. The dancing ends at the Cebu City Sports Center on Osmeña Boulevard, while the masses and processions centre on the Santo Niño Basilica, roughly 2 kilometres away in the old port district. Cars are kept out of most of the ground between them on Sunday, so every block closer you sleep is a block you won't need a ride for. Here is how the main areas compare.

Downtown, near the Basilica and Colon Street. This is the closest you can get to the Fiesta Señor processions and the busiest part of the city all weekend. Rooms here are mostly budget and mid-range hotels and they sell out first. Choose this area if the religious side of the festival matters most to you and you are happy with noise late into the night.

Fuente Osmeña and the Capitol area. This is the best compromise for most first-timers. The Cebu City Sports Center and the parade route can be reached on foot, and there are plenty of restaurants and convenience stores nearby. Osmeña Boulevard is closed early on parade day, so you can walk out of your hotel straight into the festival without needing a ride.

Cebu Business Park and Ayala Center Cebu. This area has a wider range of mid-range and upscale hotels, and it is calmer at night. The walk to the parade route takes around 30 to 40 minutes, but it is mostly flat, and the area is a good fallback if the places closer in are full.

Cebu IT Park and Lahug. IT Park has newer hotels and plenty of places to eat late, and it is easy to reach by ride-hailing on normal days. It is too far to walk to the parade comfortably, so you will depend on buses or rides on the busiest day. This is a good choice if you want quieter nights and plan to see only part of the parade.

South Road Properties (SRP). The SRP has large resort-style hotels and the Il Corso mall. It is outside the closed area, which makes it easy to reach from the airport through the Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX). Southbound buses also left from here during the 2026 festival. You will need a ride or a bus to get into the centre.

Mandaue and Mactan. These are the fallback options when the city is full. Mactan is close to the airport and has the beach resorts, but getting into Cebu City on parade morning means crossing a bridge with everyone else. If you stay here, leave very early or plan to watch the parade on TV or online and visit the city on a quieter day.

Avoid Booking Scams

Fake booking pages are a real problem around Sinulog. In January 2026, the Cebu hotel association warned that scammers were copying hotel logos, photos and even bank details on social media, offering large discounts such as 50% off and asking for payment through e-wallets.

The association's advice was simple: hotels do not ask guests to book or pay through Facebook. Book through the hotel's own website or a well-known booking platform, and if you are unsure about a deal, call the hotel using the number on its official website to confirm the reservation.

Getting In From the Airport

Mactan-Cebu International Airport is on Mactan Island, in Lapu-Lapu City, so every trip into Cebu City crosses the water. There are three routes: the two older bridges through Mandaue, and the CCLEX from Cordova to the SRP. Taxis, Grab cars and the city's MyBus services all run from the airport. On a normal day, the trip into the city takes between 30 minutes and an hour depending on traffic.

Allow much more time on the Saturday and Sunday of festival weekend. If you are staying in the closed area, your driver may only be able to drop you off at the edge of it, so pack light enough to walk the last few streets with your bags. The easiest option is to arrive on Thursday or Friday, before the closures start.

Road Closures on Festival Weekend

Road closures build up over the festival period. Streets around the Basilica and downtown close for the processions in the days before the parade, usually announced by the CCTO only a few days ahead, so check its advisories daily once you arrive.

On parade day itself, the closures are almost total. For the 2025 Grand Parade, closures started at 4 a.m. Vehicles coming from the south could go only as far as N. Bacalso Avenue at V. Rama, those from the north only to the area behind Cebu Technological University, and those from Talamban only to the Cebu Business Park. Everyone heading to the Sports Center walked the rest of the way, and cars parked in no-entry areas were towed. If you are driving yourself, park outside the centre and don't try to get close.

Getting Around the City

Walk inside the closed area. Between the Basilica, Fuente Osmeña and the Sports Center, walking is faster than anything with wheels on parade day.

Take the free festival buses. During the 2026 Fiesta Señor, the city ran free electric buses daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on a loop linking SM City Cebu, Gaisano, Plaza Independencia and the Basilica. That loop is handy if you are staying near SM City Cebu or the old port area and want to reach the religious events without a car. Similar arrangements are likely for 2027, but check the routes and pickup points once the city announces them.

Use Grab and taxis from outside the centre. Ride-hailing still works over Sinulog weekend, but cars cannot reach the closed roads and waits can be long, so book from a street that is open to traffic.

Don't count on the Cebu BRT on parade day. The Cebu Bus Rapid Transit line, which runs between the SRP and Cebu IT Park, runs past the southern bus station and up Osmeña Boulevard through Fuente and Capitol, the same road the parade uses. Expect it to be cut short or rerouted while the roads are closed, though it can still help you on the days before and after. Our Cebu BRT guide covers the stations and fares.

Leaving Cebu City for the South

Heading on to Moalboal, Oslob or Dumaguete after the festival? Plan around the bus station first. Southbound Ceres buses normally leave from the terminal on N. Bacalso Avenue, which sits beside the parade area. For the 2026 festival the city shut it for the Saturday and Sunday of festival weekend and sent southbound departures to a stopgap terminal on El Pardo Road in the SRP. Jeepneys shuttled travellers there from Katipunan Street for the usual fare, and buses coming up from the south let passengers off at Il Corso rather than in the city.

Vans heading west, to Toledo, Pinamungajan, Moalboal and the Simala shrine, loaded at their own stopgap stand by the Taboan bridge. Everything was back to normal by Monday morning. If 2027 follows the same plan, travel south on Friday or Monday if you can, and leave plenty of slack if you have to go over the weekend. Our guide to getting from Cebu to Dumaguete by sea or road covers the onward trip.

A Simple Weekend Plan

Thursday or Friday, 14 or 15 January: Arrive and check in before the closures start. Walk the parade area in the afternoon so you know your way around on Sunday.

Saturday, 16 January: Going by the 2026 festival, Saturday is procession day for Fiesta Señor. The Santo Niño image travels by boat along the coast early in the morning, then returns to the streets for a long walking procession later in the day. Confirm the official times with the Basilica before you go.

Sunday, 17 January: Grand Parade day. Walk to your viewing spot early, bring water and stay in one place. Pick a spot with shade or a wall at your back, and agree on a meeting point with your group in case phones stop working in the crush.

Monday, 18 January: Leave the city once the roads have reopened, or stay on and explore it while it is quieter. Downtown heritage sites such as Fort San Pedro and Casa Gorordo are far easier to enjoy once the crowds have gone.

Before You Go

Book a room with free cancellation now, and choose its location based on where you want to be on Sunday morning. Use only official booking channels, and plan to arrive before the weekend closures begin. In early January, check the CCTO announcements for the final road closures, bus routes and terminal changes, since those decide how you will get around for the rest of the festival.
